The White Tower is a vertical museum. You climb a spiral ramp through roughly six floors of exhibits that tell Thessaloniki’s story — from antiquity and Byzantine power through Ottoman centuries, the 1917 fire, and twentieth-century rebirth. Displays mix objects, photos and panels; English captions cover the essentials.
The rooftop terrace is the payoff: 360° over the Thermaic Gulf, the port, Aristotelous axis, Ano Poli hills and — on clear days — Mount Olympus across the water. Wind can be sharp; hold hats and phones. There is no café on the roof; cafés line the promenade below.
Mobility note: there is no lift. If stairs are difficult, use the ground-floor virtual / alternative visit option and enjoy the exterior and waterfront walk without the climb.
How to get to the White Tower
On foot
Sit on the seafront where Nikis Avenue meets the open promenade. From Aristotelous Square walk east along the water — about 15–20 minutes flat. From Ladadika / port end, similar time along the front. Easy with luggage only if your hotel is already central.
Metro, bus & airport

The tower is one stop on Thessaloniki’s best free attraction: the seafront. After the rooftop, walk Nea Paralia east toward the concert hall parks, or west toward the port and Aristotelous for coffee. Pair with the Galerian complex (Rotunda, Arch of Galerius) about 10–15 minutes inland.

What the tower is
Built in the 15th century as part of the Ottoman sea walls (on earlier Byzantine foundations), the tower later gained the name Lefkos Pyrgos after whitewashing. It has been fortress, prison and landmark; today it is the city’s postcard and a compact museum rather than a hollow viewpoint. Outside, the circular garden and promenade work as a meeting point day and night — even if you skip the ticket.

Visit order tip: do the climb when you still have energy, then use the promenade as recovery. In summer heat, go at opening or after 17:00; midday stone and queues are a poor mix.
