Spring (March–May)
Blooming parks, comfortable walking, Easter processions (dates vary). April's Alexander Marathon finishes at the White Tower. Ideal for ancient sites and Ano Poli before summer heat.
Month-by-month weather, crowd levels and what each season is actually good for — so you pick the right week, not just the right city.
For a first visit — sightseeing, food, walking the waterfront — choose April through June or September through October. Days are warm (14–28 °C), evenings need only a light jacket, and restaurant terraces are full without August's crush.
For swimming on Halkidiki — plan June to September. The city itself has no downtown beach; you'll day-trip. Water buses to the gulf beaches run mid-April into autumn — see karavakia schedule.
For festivals and culture — check the 2026 calendar: Documentary Festival in March, Alexander Marathon in April, TIF trade fair in September, International Film Festival in November.
For lowest prices and empty museums — November to March works. It's cooler and greyer, but Thessaloniki's indoor strengths (Byzantine churches, archaeology museums, café culture) shine year-round.
Typical daytime highs near the waterfront. Mountains and Halkidiki can be 2–4 °C cooler. Data: HNMS climate normals; crowds from local tourism patterns.

Blooming parks, comfortable walking, Easter processions (dates vary). April's Alexander Marathon finishes at the White Tower. Ideal for ancient sites and Ano Poli before summer heat.
Beach season on Halkidiki, rooftop bars, late dinners after 21:00. Midday sightseeing is brutal — plan museums or seafront shade 12:00–17:00. Water buses run to Peraia.
Our favourite stretch: warm September seas, TIF in early September, golden October light for photography, TIFF film festival in November. Shoulder-season hotel rates.
Quiet streets, serious food culture, no queues at the White Tower or Rotunda. The Vardaris north wind bites — layer up. Great for a long weekend from northern Europe.
May and October — warm terraces, walkable all day, fewer cruise-ship spikes than summer. April and September are close behind.
For all-day urban trekking, yes — plan like a local (late starts, long lunch, evening strolls). For a mix of city + Halkidiki beaches, summer works fine if your hotel has air conditioning.
Summer is dry. Rain clusters in autumn and winter — rarely all-day, but carry a compact umbrella Nov–Feb. See practical info for packing tips.
Match season to plan: spring/autumn → our 48-hour city itineraries; summer → add a beach day; winter → shorter outdoor loops, more museums and tavernas. Updated July 2026.
