Halkidiki's exotic beaches, the tomb of Philip II, the mountain of the gods and monasteries in the sky — all reachable before breakfast wears off.
Locals say God took his time with Halkidiki. The peninsula splits into three "legs", each with its own personality — and all of them start about an hour from the city. If you visit Thessaloniki between May and September, plan at least one day (better: two or three) here.
Closest and busiest: golden-sand resorts, beach bars and nightlife. Afytos stone village on its balcony over the sea, Sani wetlands and marina, family beaches at Chaniotis and Pefkochori, quieter coves toward Paliouri.

Pine forests dropping into Caribbean-blue water. Kayak Vourvourou bay and Diaporos islet, find the white boulders of Kavourotrypes, camp-town Sarti, fishing port Porto Koufo, lively Neos Marmaras.

The self-governed monastic republic of Mount Athos: 20 monasteries, 1,000 years of prayer. Entry is for men only, with an advance diamonitirion permit — but boat cruises from Ouranoupoli show everyone (women very much included) the cliff-hanging monasteries from the sea.

By coach (cheapest): all Halkidiki buses leave from the KTEL Chalkidikis terminal in Pylaia (68 Karakasi St — not the main KTEL Makedonia station!). From the airport: no direct coach — take bus 79A (or a €15–20 taxi) to the KTEL Chalkidikis terminal first.
By car (most freedom): rentals from ~€30–45/day in summer. Kassandra ~1 h, Nikiti ~1.25 h, Ouranoupoli ~2 h via the new highway. Beaches are spread out, so a car triples what you can see.
Taxi / transfer: €80–120 one way depending on the leg — reasonable split between four.
In 1977, archaeologists opened an unlooted royal tomb under a great mound at Vergina — almost certainly Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Today the mound is the Polycentric Museum of Aigai: you walk underground among the tomb façades, gold larnakes and burial armour. One of Greece's most moving museums.
KTEL Makedonia coach to Veria (~1 h, roughly hourly), then local KTEL Imathia bus or a ~€15 taxi for the last 12 km to Vergina village. Alternatively, guided day tours run from Thessaloniki most days in season. Driving takes ~1 h 15 via the Egnatia Odos motorway.
Capital of the Macedonian kingdom at its height and Alexander's birthplace. Astonishing pebble mosaics (the Stag Hunt, Dionysos on a panther) in situ and in the excellent modern museum. Getting there: KTEL buses toward Giannitsa/Edessa stop at Pella (~45 min), or ~40 min by car on the way to Edessa.
Dion was the Macedonians' sacred city, where Alexander sacrificed before invading Persia — a lush archaeological park of sanctuaries, mosaics and springs. Pair it with Litochoro and a walk into the Enipeas gorge on the flanks of Olympus (2,918 m). Getting there: train or KTEL to Litochoro (~1–1.5 h), local taxi to Dion; by car ~1 h 15.
Six working monasteries balance on sandstone towers 400 m above the town of Kalambaka — a UNESCO site that looks invented. It's a long day from Thessaloniki but one of Greece's great sights.
Greece's waterfall town: the 70 m Karanos falls thunder off the edge of the old town. Lovely by train (~1.5–2 h) — combine with Pella on the road route.
Open-air 37 °C thermal pools in a mountain gorge below Kaimaktsalan — magic on a crisp day. ~1 h 45 by car (or with Edessa on a tour); the free river pools never close.
One of Europe's top birdwatching wetlands: Dalmatian pelicans, flamingos, water buffalo. Plaka-boat trips at dawn are unforgettable. Car only, ~1.5 h north.
