Why it works
Thessaloniki is underrated for families
Unlike hilly Athens, the core of Thessaloniki is flat and compact — kids can handle the port-to-White-Tower promenade. Greeks adore children; restaurants welcome them and portions are generous. English is widely spoken.
Trade-off: no downtown swimmable beach. Plan one Halkidiki day or a summer karavaki water bus to Peraia. Win: lower prices and fewer tour-bus mobs than the capital.

White Tower museum
Six floors of city history with views from the top. Central, air-conditioned — good midday escape in summer. Combined tickets with other museums available.
Waterfront & Umbrellas
Scooters, ice cream, the Umbrellas sculpture and open space to run. Evening strolls are safe and lively. Flat entire length.
Thessaloniki Zoo (Seih Sou forest)
Small municipal zoo above the city in the forest — combine with picnic and shade. Bus from centre; taxi easier with toddlers.
Archaeological Museum
Gold of Macedon impresses older kids; café and garden for breaks. Less overwhelming than Athens' national museum.
Halkidiki beach day
Sandy shallow bays at Sani, Pefkochori or Nea Fokea — 1–2 h by car or KTEL. Full guide on day trips.
Practical
Getting around with children
- Metro & buses: Integrated ticket €0.60 — children under 6 often ride free (check current OASTH policy). Strollers fold on busy buses.
- Airport: Bus 01X is cheap but slow with luggage; taxi flat €25 day / €35 night — see airport transfer guide.
- Car seats: Standard taxis rarely have them; pre-book private transfer if required.
- Food: Souvlaki, tiropita, fresh orange juice everywhere. High chairs common in centre restaurants.
- Heat: Avoid midday sightseeing Jun–Aug; museums and seafront shade 12:00–17:00. Best months: May or October.
- Emergency: 112 (English spoken). Paediatric AHEPA Hospital for serious issues — numbers on practical info.

Rent a car or KTEL to Halkidiki — pack umbrellas, snacks, change of clothes. Back for souvlaki near the hotel.

Family travel questions
Is tap water safe for babies?
Yes in the city — same as for adults. Bottled water is cheap if you prefer.
Can we use a buggy on the metro?
Yes — new stations have lifts. Avoid rush hour 08:00–09:30 and 14:00–15:30 if possible.
Are there playgrounds?
Several along the Nea Paralia (new waterfront) and in parks. Greeks are relaxed about kids playing in squares.
